By making innovative use of architectural typologies and materials, coupled with a social, public and urban agenda, the studio works on architectural projects of all scales - from interior design to entire cities.
KNOWSPACE was founded by Erhard An-He Kinzelbach in New York, matured in Vienna and Hangzhou, and currently operates from Berlin. The studio works internationally - with an equally cosmopolitan and local emphasis and a focus on building in Europe and China. It sees its role as that of a mediator and facilitator of the complex interaction between cultural, political, economic and physical forces at play in architectural projects. Technical, inter-cultural and bilingual competences ensure effective concept development and smooth project handling locally as well as across continental borders.
Previously completed projects range from major new buildings such as the extension of the courthouse in Sankt Pölten or studio houses for a renowned Chinese painter, to the new headquarters of the manufacturer of the famous E2 table, known as the Eiermann table, and small buildings in public space, for example, in Ai Weiwei's Jinhua Architecture Park.
KNOWSPACE regularly collaborates with local partners on the realization of building projects, most notable in this respect are the collaborations with Christian Kronaus, Vienna and thinkbuild, Berlin.
In addition to building, teaching and design research are essential components of KNOWSPACE's architectural practice, most recently Erhard An-He Kinzelbach, invited by Pritzker laureate Wang Shu, taught as professor of architectural design at China's most prestigious art school, the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Currently he is a tenured professor for architectural design and construction at Bochum University of Applied Sciences in Germany.
The continuous interaction of professional practice, research and teaching generates knowledge that serves as the basis for typological reinvention, innovative design solutions of spatial and programmatic complexity, as well as for the production of polyvalent space and ambiguous form.
